This project uses survey data collected from community college international educators to achieve two objectives:
- To document how community colleges financially support study abroad participation
- To explore associations between financial support approaches and study abroad participation rates, both in general and for specific student demographic groups.
This project’s data was collected between April and June 2025 from representatives of colleges in our Mapping Community College International Education dataset that offer study abroad. We received responses from 71 survey participants (21.9% response rate), although not all participants answered all the survey questions.
How do community colleges financially support study abroad participation?
To address this project’s first objective, we summarized participants’ survey responses to questions about whether financial support was offered at all, what type and its amount (if yes), how students applied for financial support, and how financial support was communicated to students. The figures below summarize our findings.
What financial support approaches relate to higher study abroad participation rates? Are participation rates by financial support approaches different for students from different demographic groups?
Analyses that help address this project’s second objective are currently in-progress.
